Exochiko, Filiatra

Exochiko (Greek, Modern: Εξοχικό, older form: -on) is a Greek village located in the municipality of Filiatra in western Messinia, Greece and it located 76 km WNW of Kalamata and 4 km north of town. Its population is 198 people (2001 census). Its elevation is 60 m. The village was known as Katsimbalis or Katsibalis (Κατσίμπαλης) until 1961.

Geography

Exochiko is located nearly south of Pyrgos, SSW of Kyparissia and nearly north of Pylos. The village is located around 1 km from the GR-9 (Pyrgos - Kyparissia - Pylos - Methoni). Its nearest beach is Stomio which is 2 km to the west as well as its coast. The village has about 5 km of paved road, 6 km of gravel road and has about 6 km of hydro and phone lines. Much of the area is used for farming; forests and mountains cover the remainder of the area around Exochiko.

History

Its 1950 population was 240 and has a school and a telephone and administered as part of a community of Trifyllia. In the origin of the older name, it had two origin, the first is believed to be named after a Turkish local leader Katsibali (Kacibal, Kacibali?), the second was named after a first gentleman of Theodoros Kolokotronis that was name Katsibali. Exochiko is a settlement that was founded by Arcadians in the mid 19th century, most of these arrived from Alonistaina. Its residents reside on agriculture including oil production, groves and greenhouses.

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, its inhabitants left for other parts of the developed world especially (northern) North America. Though its population has been recovered from the 1950 level and residents from other villages and Filiatra settle in.
